18. What kind of quality standards exist for transport fuels? The EU Fuel Quality Directive regulates the quality specifications for petrol and other transport fuels. The quality standards of the Directive are implemented in national legislation and complemented by European fuel quality standards (EN). They set the minimum requirements ensuring trouble-free functioning of fuels. In Finland, only transport fuels that satisfy the requirements of the Directive and the related legislation may be distributed.
The standards are adopted by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). They are prepared by experts in partnership with fuel and engine manufacturers and other relevant parties. The standards produced by the Committee are then ratified in Finland as SFS-EN standards. The European Standard EN 228 concerning automotive fuels sets the quality requirements for motor petrol and requirements for the new E10 petrol will be included in the Standard. For the time being the requirements are included in the national Standard. (SFS 5979 Automotive fuels. Unleaded petrol, high oxygen content (E10). Requirements and test methods.)
